American Silver Cup marked 1862 in one end of the tab of William S. Gale & Son’s trademark
stamp marked on the other end G & S. A separate stamp of 925 Sterling occupies the center of
position as well as a large capital J. Above which there is the additional mark of W. Gale and
Son, New York. The handle is construed as a tasseled rope w/faux ball bearing cog decoration
top and bottom. Possible slight trace gilded interior of the cup which sits on a spreading foot.
Inscribed in its large reserve Elizabeth Holland Chaplin? August 25, 1864. The United States
did not convert officially to the Sterling Standard until 1868 which did not prevent makers from
producing that standard earlier. This piece represents a very high standard of workmanship.
